What you need

  • A marriage registered at a Thai district office (amphur), or a foreign marriage registered in Thailand. The certificate is called Kor Ror 2 or 3 (and Kor Ror 22 for foreign marriages).
  • 400,000 THB in a Thai bank account in your name for at least 2 months, or 40,000 THB a month in income.
  • Your spouse's ID card and house registration book (tabien baan).
  • Photos of you together at home, and sometimes a simple map.

The yearly extension

  1. Apply at your immigration office with your spouse. Both of you usually need to attend.
  2. Bring the bank letter and book, marriage certificate, your spouse's ID and house book, photos and the TM.7 form.
  3. Expect a 30-day 'under consideration' stamp and a home visit by an officer during that period.
  4. Return to collect the full year's extension.
Officers want to see a genuine shared life: clothes in the wardrobe, wedding photos, neighbours who know you. Paper marriages are prosecuted.

Before you decide

Questions, answered.

Does marriage guarantee permission to stay?

No. You still need the appropriate application and supporting evidence, and the authorities decide permission.

Will my family all use the same application?

Not necessarily. Each person's nationality, relationship and circumstances should be checked.

Do we need to live together?

Yes. The extension is based on supporting your family in Thailand, and the home visit checks it.

What if we separate?

The extension ends with the marriage. Plan early; you may qualify for another route such as [retirement](/visas/retirement/).

Do relationship documents need translation or legalisation?

Accepted documents and any translation or legalisation requirements depend on the responsible authority and application. Check that authority’s current checklist for your own civil documents.

Can family members automatically use the same visa?

Do not assume one person’s visa covers everyone. Review each relationship, age, purpose and the main applicant’s actual status with the responsible authority.

How should we coordinate the move as a family?

Put the visa review, housing, school plans, healthcare and travel dates on the same timeline. Identify the documents and decisions that must happen before a commitment.
