VISA GUIDE

Family visas: Thai children, dependants and guardians

Thailand has a family visa for almost every situation. Each one is a Non-O, renewed yearly at immigration, and each one is tied to the person you are joining.

Documents you'll be asked for

  • Birth certificate showing the parent, translated and legalised if issued abroad.
  • Marriage certificate for spouses, registered in Thailand if possible.
  • The main holder's passport, visa and work permit or school letter.
  • Bank letter and book for the money rule, and photos of family life.
Foreign certificates usually need translation and legalisation before immigration accepts them. See documents and legal help.

Renewal and travel

Family extensions run for one year and are renewed at your local immigration office, like the marriage visa. The dependant's extension usually can't run longer than the main holder's. Get a re-entry permit before any trip abroad.

Before you decide

Questions, answered.

Can a dependant work?

Only with their own work permit. Some LTR dependants can apply for one more easily; check your own case.

My child is Thai but I'm not married to their mother. Can I still get a visa?

Often yes, if you're named on the birth certificate and you support the child. Expect closer questioning and a home visit.
